What is a Hot Water Boiler?

At the most basic level, a hot water boiler uses some type of fuel or energy source (typically gas, oil, or electricity) to heat water.

Instead of boiling, water is heated to around 180-200 degrees Fahrenheit.

The heated water is then typically used as part of a radiant heating system to provide heat inside a building.

Most modern hot water boilers incorporate some type of pump to circulate heated water through a heating system. In this way, hot water boilers actually provide more efficient heating than most steam boilers.

Different Types of Hot Water Boilers

There are two primary types of hot water boilers: firetube and watertube boilers.

In a firetube design, there are tubes inside the boiler in which combustion gases are burned to generate heat. Water surrounds these tubes. Heat is transferred into the water directly through the walls of the firetubes.

A watertube design is essentially the exact opposite of a firetube design. In this type of boiler, water is inside the tubes. The tubes pass through a combustion chamber where gases are burned to generate heat.

Each type has its own unique advantages. Firetube boilers are generally more compact, highly efficient, and easier to maintain. They can easily handle load surges at high pressures and generally have a lower total cost to own.

Firetube boilers are found in all but the most demanding applications.

Watertube boilers operate at higher pressures and can provide higher output temperatures. They can also provide faster heat recovery, more precise handling of load fluctuations, and better turn down.

Watertube boilers are well suited for highly demanding applications.

Differences Between Hot Water Boilers and Steam Boilers

Hot water boilers and steam boilers are totally different types of equipment, yet they are both used in similar radiant heating applications. The main difference is the method used to provide heat.

Hot water boilers only heat water to about 200 degrees Fahrenheit. In this way, they expend less energy up front since they don’t need to achieve very high water temperatures.

However, hot water boilers do use more energy to pump water through the heating system. With modern hot water boilers, integrated pumps ensure that hot water flows easily through heating pipes.

Steam boilers actually heat water to its boiling point in order to generate steam. These boilers use more energy initially to create steam.

However, steam boilers use much less energy to circulate steam through a heating system since steam naturally rises as it heats up. When the steam cools and condenses back into water, it flows back to the boiler all on its own with no pumps required.

Difference Between Hot Water Heater and Hot Water Boiler

These two water heating systems are commonly confused. In fact, the names are often used interchangeably. However, they really couldn’t be more different from each other.

Hot water heaters provide hot, potable water for washing and cooking. The water is typically heated using a gas burner and stored in a large tank at around 125 degrees Fahrenheit. The heater cycles on and off to maintain this temperature.

Hot water boilers don’t store heated water and are generally not used to provide potable water. Instead, these units heat water to around 200 degrees Fahrenheit and pump it through radiant heating systems inside buildings in order to provide heat.
